Nano HOB Filter for Planted Tanks Under 4 Gallons

The Dymax Slim Flo SF-120 Filter is a compact hang-on-back filter built for the smallest freshwater planted tanks. It hangs on the tank rim and pulls water through a wool carbon cartridge that captures particulates and removes discoloration. The motor is quiet enough that you will not notice it running, which matters in a desktop setup where noise carries.

At 30 GPH with adjustable flow, the SF-120 gives you full control over turnover rate. That makes it practical for tanks housing delicate shrimp or slow-swimming fish that struggle against a strong current. A leveling knob lets you dial in a flush hang even if your tank rim is not perfectly level.

Key Features:

  • Hang-on-back design keeps the full interior volume of the tank free for plants and livestock
  • Adjustable flow dial lets you reduce output to protect shrimp, fry, and slow-swimming fish
  • Wool carbon cartridge captures particulates and removes water discoloration
  • Quiet motor operation suitable for desktop and bedroom setups
  • Leveling knob accommodates tank rims that are not perfectly level
  • Intake sponge prevents small fish and shrimp from being drawn into the filter
  • Replacement cartridges are sold separately as a 2-pack (DM-SFC-S)

Ideal For:

  • Desktop planted tanks of 1 to 4 gallons housing shrimp, a single betta, or a small schooling nano fish
  • Nano aquascape builds where any in-tank equipment would disrupt the hardscape layout
  • First-time hobbyists who want a simple, no-plumbing filter that is ready to run out of the box

Pro Tips:

  • Set the flow on the low end when running shrimp. Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp are sensitive to strong surface agitation. Start at the lowest flow setting and increase gradually only if water quality requires it.
  • Replace the cartridge before it clogs, not after. A clogged cartridge reduces flow and can cause the filter to overflow at the rim. Check it every three to four weeks and swap it out before you notice a drop in output.
  • Pre-wet the cartridge before inserting it. A dry cartridge can trap air and cause the filter to run noisily for the first few minutes. Soaking it briefly before installation gets filtration started right away.
