Fauna Marin AEFW X: Acropora Flatworm Treatment for Reef Tanks
Acropora eating flatworms (AEFW) are one of the most damaging pests an SPS keeper can face. They hide in plain sight, laying eggs at the base of Acropora colonies and slowly stripping tissue until the coral bleaches and dies. Fauna Marin AEFW X is a targeted, reef-safe solution designed to break the flatworm life cycle directly inside your display tank, without removing corals for dipping or stressing the rest of your livestock.
AEFW X uses a capsaicin-based formula (less than 2% capsaicin extract) to block larval metamorphosis, preventing juveniles from reaching reproductive adulthood. Adults that are already present stop reproducing and cease to grow further. With consistent daily dosing over 4 to 6 weeks, most infested tanks are completely cleared. After treatment, Acropora colonies typically exhibit improved mucus secretion and a stronger immune response, which helps reduce the risk of reinfection.
Key Features:
- Targets two species: Prosthiostomum acroporae (AEFW) and the newer NAEFW flatworm strain
- Blocks larval development, preventing flatworms from reaching reproductive maturity
- Stops adult flatworm reproduction and growth during the treatment window
- Reef safe at recommended doses. Other tank inhabitants, including fish, invertebrates, and non-Acropora corals, are not affected
- Active ingredient is capsaicin extract at less than 2% concentration
- UV sterilizers must be switched off during dosing. Activated carbon, ozone, and adsorbers may remain running
- Treatment can be extended beyond 6 weeks if needed with no documented harm to the reef
Ideal For:
- SPS reef keepers with confirmed AEFW or NAEFW infestations who want to treat in-tank without coral removal
- Acropora-heavy systems where repeated dipping would cause unacceptable stress to colonies
- Hobbyists who have recently introduced new Acropora frags and want to use a preventive dosing protocol
- Tanks recovering from a flatworm outbreak where immune support and reduced reinfection risk are a priority
- Advanced reef keepers running mixed SPS and LPS systems where a reef-safe, targeted treatment is required
Pro Tips:
- Start preventive dosing when adding new Acropora frags.
- Even with a quarantine setup, AEFW eggs can survive on coral tissue. Dropping to the prevention dose (2 ml per 100 liters per day) after adding new Acropora gives you a buffer before any infestation can establish.
- Turn off your UV sterilizer before each dose.
- UV will degrade the active compounds before they reach full concentration in the water column. Dose first, wait at least an hour, then restart UV if needed.
- Watch your Acropora closely during weeks 2 and 3.
- This is when dying flatworms and eggs are released from coral tissue. Some hobbyists see brief, minor stress responses in their Acropora during this phase. Maintain stable parameters throughout treatment to support recovery.
- Do not increase the dose to speed up results.
- The product works by disrupting larval development across multiple generations. Exceeding the recommended dose does not accelerate the timeline and may stress livestock unnecessarily.
AEFW X is Effective Against:
- Prosthiostomum Acroporae (Acropora eating flatworm)
- New AEFW flatworm (NAEFW)
