Nitrite Test Kit for Aquarium Cycling, Troubleshooting, and Emergency Diagnostics
The Salifert Nitrite Aquarium Test is a colorimetric kit for measuring nitrite (NO₂) in aquariums. In established tanks, nitrite should be undetectable; its presence indicates cycle issues or breakdowns. Since nitrite is toxic even at low levels, accurate detection is crucial, and many kits fall short. Most kits are affected by amines, causing false lows. Salifert's test avoids this interference, providing reliable results within a minute. It has two scales: an ultra-low (0.002–0.12 mg/L) for cycling and testing undetectable levels, and a medium scale for higher concentrations.
Key Features:
- Amine-interference-resistant formulation prevents falsely low readings that mask toxic nitrite levels.
- Two measurement scales: ultra-low (0.002–0.12 mg/L nitrite-nitrogen) and medium range for higher cycling concentrations.
- Full color development within one minute for fast results.
- Strong color intensity makes even trace concentrations easy to detect.
- Approximately 60 tests per kit.
- Suitable for both marine and freshwater aquariums.
Ideal For:
- New tank cycling — daily or every-other-day testing to track the nitrogen cycle through its nitrite peak and confirm the cycle is complete before adding livestock.
- Established reef and saltwater tanks after a disruption — large water changes, major livestock additions, medication use, or equipment failures that could stress or crash the biological filter.
- Emergency diagnosis when fish or invertebrates show stress symptoms without an obvious cause.
- Freshwater aquariums cycling a new tank or recovering from a filter crash.
Why Nitrite Matters?
Nitrite is the intermediate product of the nitrogen cycle, produced when ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas) convert ammonia but before nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrospira) convert it to the less acutely toxic nitrate. In an established tank, this conversion happens fast enough that nitrite stays effectively at zero. When it doesn't — due to an immature cycle, a bacterial die-off from medication, excessive cleaning of biological filter media, or a sudden spike in bioload — nitrite can reach concentrations that cause gill damage, oxygen deprivation, and rapid fish and invertebrate mortality. The fact that many test kits can underreport nitrite due to amine interference makes a resistant formulation like Salifert's particularly important for accurate diagnostics.
Pro Tips:
- Test every day during the nitrogen cycle. Nitrite spikes hard and fast during the middle of the cycle, often reaching peak within days of the ammonia spike. Daily testing during this phase gives you the clearest picture of where you are in the cycle and when it's safe to add livestock.
- Retest after any major tank disruption. Adding a large amount of new livestock, using antibiotics or medications, or doing a very large water change can stress the biological filter enough to cause a temporary nitrite spike. Testing 24–48 hours after these events can catch a problem before it becomes a crisis.
- A result of zero doesn't always mean zero. In amine-prone water conditions, kits without interference resistance can read zero when nitrite is actually present. If fish are showing unexplained stress in an otherwise seemingly stable tank, retest with this kit to rule out a masked nitrite issue.
